Quarantine Your Way
At first glance, it may seem like quarantine is just a long-winded stretch of boredom and lonesomeness. We’ve detached ourselves, at least physically, from our jobs, schools, social lives, and many of our hobbies. It seems like quarantine would definitively leave us all feeling pretty dejected and unhappy. Yet everyone reacts differently to huge shifts in their lives. Social butterflies must feel rather cocooned right now, but homebodies are probably more relaxed than ever. It’s a tough time for workaholics and shopaholics alike, unless they can transition their respective interests online; yet things are a lot simpler for couch potatoes and thrifty folks.

On Friday, November 23rd, I drove from my house in West Windsor, New Jersey, to the suburban retirement community, the Village Grande, seven minutes away. My brother, Ari, accompanied me, bringing along two sets of challah and grape juice. One of the two pairs was for our regular synagogue attendee, Norman, who had offered to introduce me to his neighbor of sixteen years, Emil. The other was for the subject of our interview that day: Emil Cohen.

On the night of November 9, 1938, the Nazi regime began their reign of terror and violence over the Jews of Germany. Referred to as Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, many consider it the beginning of the Holocaust. On that night, the Nazis plundered thousands of Jewish businesses and synagogues, following which Nazi officers began arresting Jewish men to be sent to concentration camps.
