Why We All Step Back From Politics

“Politicians care only about progressing their own power not helping the people they jovially serve.”

You’re walking into McDonald's, contemplating your order. You’re feeling for some beef right now. There are multiple tills open but you walk up to till 4.

“Hello, what would you like to order?” They lack any colourful personality and it makes you shift a tad.

“Yes, ah- I’d like a Big Mac pl-”

“No, I think you’ll have a Chicken Legend.” Your mouth hovers open for a second before snapping shut. Their eyes look straight through you.

“But you aren’t even going to be eating i-”

Till 3 pipes up, “Frankly, they should be eating a happy meal.” Your’s and Till 4’s necks snap towards her. Their eyes are narrowed and you’re left looking between them feeling thoroughly invisible.

“And what do you know about what people should be eating Mary? You’ve never even had a McDonald’s before” There’s a murmur of agreement throughout the tills.

Mary bristles. “We should vote on it.”

You sigh. You just really want your Big Mac.

The tills all split onto the side that they support. Till 4 wins due to their experience in eating McDonald’s and you leave with a Chicken Legend that you never wanted in the first place.

What I’m trying to get across is that politicians have an uncanny talent of making the public feel invisible and unheard.

Am I the only one who feels uncomfortable that rich, pompous people who have no experience of the real world are the one’s who are trying to decide how we’re living our lives?

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who actually idolises any of our modern politicians. You don’t hear people say “when I’m older I want to be like Theresa May” do you?

Churchill, Gladstone and Lloyd George. Now those were politicians that actually cared about our lives. They led us through the industrial age, faced down Nazism and built the NHS. Those were real politicians. They’re also no longer the politicians we see anymore.
