Recently, we witnessed potential history as the investigation into the Trump-Russia ties took another step forward as special counsel Robert Mueller announced the first indictments against former foreign policy George Papadopoulos, former campaign manager Paul Manafort, and Manafort associate Rick Gates. They were indicted on charges of, amongst other things, money laundering and conspiracy against the United States. This major announcement has many people wondering where Mueller's investigation will lead next. I have a few ideas about that. Just a few. I'm not saying that what I'm about to say is all I have to say about this issue. I'm saying that because not only does this matter to Americans, but it also matters to the rest of the world, because the American president has always been considered the "leader of the free world." However, Trump is slowly degrading that every single day, making other countries understandably view the United States of America - again, the "leader of the free world" - very unfavorably.
First, Michael Flynn: we all know that he lied about meeting with Russian ambassador Sergey Kisslyak. But he has also been in trouble with the law for accepting money from foreign sources, such as Russia's state-owned RT. He even got caught at an RT gala event sitting next to Russian president Vladimir Putin. All of this might make Mueller think he may have been involved in election collusion. All of that aside, guess who else lied to FBI - George Papadopoulos! And Papadopoulos was found guilty in the Mueller investigation! (Just sayin'.)
Next, Jeff Sessions: he also lied about Russian connections. To be more specific, he said that he did not have any connections with any Russian officials whatsoever. He also said that he knew of no connections between anybody in the Trump campaign that had ties to Russia. Well, these new indictments from Mueller and his team kinda sorta state otherwise, because, again, both Rick Gates and Paul Manafort were indicted on charges of conspiracy against the United States - meaning they had connections with Russia. And Sessions knew about this because he attended a meeting in March of last year with - you guessed it - Donald Trump, where Sessions was introduced to Papadopoulos, who said that he had connections that could arrange a meeting between Trump and Putin. So Jeff Sessions' claims that he knew nothing of Russian connections are big fat lies.
Then, Jared Kushner: there are new reports that Mueller is starting to put a magnifying glass on Donald Trump's son-in-law, not just because of nepotism, but also because Kushner turned over documents to the Mueller team that are about, of all things, the firing of former FBI director James Comey, who was overseeing Russia collusion before he was fired and Mueller took over. This is because it has been recently reported that Trump blames Kushner for his role in the firing of Comey. What this tells me is that the bigger this Russia investigation gets, the more it looks like firing Comey could be considered obstruction of justice, and I think you know what's going to happen from there.
I'm just telling all of you right now: Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, and George Papadopoulos are just the very beginning, and I don't think Robert S. Mueller III will be taking any breaks with this Trump-Russia business anytime soon. The farther down the road we get, the more we seem to learn about what (exactly) happened and who was involved. I guess we truly do learn something new every day, don't we?
Maybe Stephen Colbert can bring his Figure-It-Out-A-Tron back out and piece all of this together for us...
