The Middle Ground of Polar Extremes

An Alternative View to America's Immigration Issues

It’s no secret that America is divided into two polar opposite views when it comes to immigration. The media likes to portray the issue as only two options for resolution. One option is to build the wall and keep all immigration out of the United States, and the other to just open the borders and let whoever wants in, in with no questions asked. But, maybe there is a third option other than the two that are shown to us in the media. Though most people in academia hate the term of “what if,” possibly this is the perfect situation. This article isn’t about the current status of America. This is an article about the future of America.

What if the money being spent to build the southern wall was redirected towards finding a more efficient way to process visa applications? For the people that are already in the United States, if you have been here for four years or more you can apply for a green card under an expedited program. The only condition is that you have not been in any negative interaction with law enforcement since arriving in the United States. If you have been here for ten years or more, you can apply for permanent residency status, under the condition you have not been in any negative interaction with law enforcement in which you have been found guilty of any crimes. If you have been here for 20 years or more, you can apply for citizenship. The conditions of the previous groups still apply. If you have been in the United States less than four years you may apply for your visa while remaining in the United States under the condition of no negative interaction with law enforcement in which you are found guilty of any crimes. Continued residency in the United States applies to all persons until formal processing of their applications are completed. To all other persons illegally in the United States, they can still apply but will be moved to holding residency. The conditions of this temporary residency will be of similar comparison to what portable housing is. There will be no more tents. There will be no more cages. This area will be paid for from a portion of the budget for the wall. There will be available WIFI so that they may contact family members if needed. This will help the government have time to conduct better processing of information.

This would allow millions of new tax paying persons into the system in the United States. The average American pays roughly 10,489 dollars a year in taxes. Some experts estimate there are 12.5 million illegal immigrants in the United States today. If only 10 million were able to become taxpaying persons that would bring an estimated 104,890,000,000 a year into the federal government. The revenue from the taxes of all these new taxpayers could relieve some of the national debt and help improve more of the cities that these people live in.

We as Americans and as people in the global world need to remember that the world is always changing and that means that we must adapt to the world as is moves or we will get left behind. This does not mean we need to change who we are and forget where we came from, but possibly change the course for the future of how we demonstrate the founding principles this great nation was founded on. Maybe the United States doesn’t need to be made great again. Maybe the United States just needs to remember what it means to be great. From Ellis Island to Cuban refugees, let's work together to keep America’s tradition of being great.
