One Reason Why We Cannot Solve America’s Biggest Problems

What's holding us back?

How many of us go online on our social media platform, on a blog, or a forum only to address an issue that requires the public’s awareness? Every day millions of social media users post articles, comments, and suggestions regarding something they want to see a change for in our world. While everyone’s needs and wants are going to differ from those of their peers, it is safe to say that having the freedom to post whatever it is that we want to have an open conversation about is a privilege that we as American citizens, who love this great country of ours, make sure to take advantage of on a daily basis. Although, we cannot expect everyone to agree with our concerns on any topic; therefore, there shouldn’t be any harm in putting them out to the public. Unfortunately, there are individuals who deem those concerns as propaganda. Or rather, a way to force one’s agenda on the population that wants nothing to do with anything that is designed to take advantage of it.

This, of course, is how comment wars start. One person who disagrees strongly with another person’s thoughts or concerns, lashes out and calls their statement “propaganda.” With a lack of class and tack, words of insults are thrown here and there, left and right, creating a fierce battle of who can shame the other person the most. Most of the times, the objective here isn’t to help solve a problem, nor is it to understand the issue at hand. What started off as a disagreement can sometimes turn into making death threats and wishing the worst for someone else. So what exactly creates this overwhelmed burst of anger and frustration among those who disagree with another? Why be so “passionate” over another person’s perception on a subject or topic of conversation?

I find it ludicrous that even though we claim to want the same things for ourselves and for everyone else, we can never come to a unified agreement on how to go about achieving those goals. I mean, we all want a great education, affordable tuitions, effective and affordable healthcare for everyone, well-paying jobs, security and safety from foreign enemies as well as domestic terrorists; basically a joyful and successful lifestyle. So, why is there so much opposition and so many disagreements when it comes to talking about how we can go about acquiring any one of those things? I feel that our society is engulfed in greed, jealousy, fear, and sometimes ignorance as well. As a result of this, being able to work as a collective to achieve any of these goals has become nearly impossible to do.

There is a notion that if someone addresses a problem in America that needs solving, then that person hates America and needs to leave the place they have called home for so many years. I just can never understand how wanting to improve the conditions of your homeland can make anyone unpatriotic. Pride and ego are two major factors that blind certain people with an illusion that they’re living in the greatest, most amazing place in the world, and not noticing the issues that are growing every day in front of their faces, deteriorating the very foundation of our nation. This illusion will consume these individuals until reality pulls the rug right underneath their feet, where they will then find themselves complaining about how our politicians have not kept their promises or how the government is out to get everyone. One thing we should know about politicians is that their role and purpose in our society is to decide who in the population should have which piece of that pie and how big of a piece they should get. So by that definition, we should already know that no politician will have everyone’s interest at hand, even if they claim to do so before being elected into office.

The truth isn’t something that can be told to someone and be accepted right there on the spot. One must realize it for themselves before accepting it as truth. Some of us fail to recognize the anger from within, and in return, transfer that same negative charge out onto the world. This is the same anger that was transferred to us from the people in our past. The same anger that we have given a home to within ourselves from the pain that was inflicted onto us at a young age. Some of us have become so self-involved with our own version of the truth that we have become blind to the suffering of others. We sometimes forget that everyone’s reality has an impact on our own, and that people around us help shape our reality. It’s very easy to place blame, and then turn a blind eye on the issues that are affecting those around us, rather than trying to understand the origin of their shortcomings and help come up with a solution to fix those issues.

As we all know, the energy we send out into the world is the same energy that we receive from the world. When you think about some of the greatest humanitarians who are no longer with us today that have helped create some of the biggest positive changes in the world, they connected with millions of people around the world during their time, without the use of social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter. One thing they all had in common was their ability to see a problem in the eye of another, recognize it as a problem and not as an agenda, and then take the necessary actions to try and help solve the problem. Nowadays, anytime someone addresses a problem, some poor uninformed soul is going to feel as if that problem has now created a new problem for them, or view the problem as a false complaint that has been fabricated for the sole purpose of taking something important away from them that disrupts the flow of comfort in their life. The more we stop thinking as a collective, the more we stop caring for thy neighbor. Everyone has their own problems to deal with, and while one man’s problem may not be your own, it should not be perceived as propaganda, especially when it’s affecting a marginalized group of people. Maybe, just maybe, it is possible that the people who are being accused of pushing an agenda are the ones that are being affected by an agenda that some people are not aware of. So to sum it all up, one of the things holding America back from becoming a great nation again is our inability, as its citizens, to decide what’s best for America without anyone in the mass screaming “PROPAGANDA!”
