Mueller Must Go Beyond the "Four Corners" of His Report

Congress has to demand more than a reading of the Mueller Report on TV

“…in many important ways, the United States no longer has a department of justice.” – Leonard Pitts, Jr., Columnist at the Miami Herald

Three months after current Attorney General Barr first declared the end of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, concluding there was no "there" there, Mueller told the country in less than ten minutes that he was not saying anything else beyond his report, even if Congress called him in to testify.

Now that Mueller has agreed to testify, the question is, will he do the patriotic and constitutional thing; the thing that’s in the country’s best interest—give full and complete testimony to Congress. Already some members of Congress and the press are giving him a pass by arguing that all he has to do is say what’s in the report live on TV.

If you read the report, you notice off the bat how many times Mueller draws no conclusions on conspiracy because some witnesses would not voluntarily agree to be interviewed. The main target, Trump, was never interviewed in an investigation of the highest crimes that a US president could ever commit. Mueller didn’t follow the money, and he seems to believe that a DOJ guideline overrules the spirit of the Constitution.

Answer the question "Why" for the People

Congress will need to go further than what is outlined in the Mueller report. It’s important for people to understand the number of ways in which Trump has obstructed justice, but more importantly, the people must learn why—that’s what Congress and the press has to find out for the American people.

It doesn’t really matter why Trump obstructed justice legally. It is a crime, and punishable by law. But it does matter gravely for our nation, the reasons why he obstructed justice, what all he was actually covering up, and what he has been doing covertly since being in office.

Those questions are unanswered, and if Mueller’s report had been as thorough as it should have been, we would have answers to those questions. He wouldn’t have copped out of overruling the DOJ guideline, or any AG who tried to sweep something like this under the rug.

This is a time for patriots. This is a time where we as a nation have to once again divide the line. This is not a partisan question; it is a fundamental question of who we are. Either we are a democracy, or we are not. Either you stand with the Constitution, or you don’t.

Those standing with Trump are standing on the opposite side of the Constitution; standing in stark opposition to our ideals as a free and open democracy. You are a traitor if you continue to abide by this corrupt administration. If you be patriots, you must stand and defend the Constitution.

Knock It Out of the Park

Mueller has a chance to redeem himself this week. He lost all kinds of credibility in his nine-minute press conference declaring that he has nothing else to say outside of his report. Despite his distinguished record of service, when our democracy needed him to knock it out of the park, he whiffed.

He has a rare second chance to rewrite his place in history with his testimony before Congress. If he cops out, by referencing any restrictions coming down from the DOJ, he will have lost it forever.

It is a sick perversion that we’ve seen over and over again where Republicans who were once, at the very least, respectable, trade their souls in order to cover for this president. Is Mueller a victim as well? Is he in the palace—part of the cabal? Or is he a true patriot? We will know one way or the other at the end of his testimony this week.
