Letter to the Rest of the World

We don't think this is normal, either.

Dear World,

Hello, rest of the world. I live in the United States of America, and I would just like to let you know that nothing here is normal right now.

For example, we have a president without any military or political experience. His name is Donald Trump. He uses Twitter to make all of his announcements, but he also uses the social media platform for name-calling, and he does this to other politicians regardless of political party, leaders of other countries, and now he’s even doing it to athletes and their relatives. What kind of leader of the free world does that? This is not normal.

He tried to ban Muslims and refugees from entering the United States, he pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord, and he is currently backing somebody that has been accused of sexually assaulting minors, some as young as 14-years-old. We have a person that that thinks this is ok. This is not normal.

We are still one of the last developed country in the world without universal healthcare. Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, enacted what is called the Affordable Care Act, which mandated that everyone have health insurance or pay a fine, provided subsidies to middle-class families, and expanded Medicaid to more low-income people. Trump is trying to reverse that in his new tax plan because he and his Republicans say that the Affordable Care Act is an example of government overreach and thought that the Affordable Care Act denied choice to the American people and they think a free market solution will bring the cost down. To put things in perspective, about 20 million people are helped by the Affordable Care Act, which is about the same as the population of Paris, London, and Tokyo combined. This is not normal.

Getting back to the Republican tax plan, many people, including the majority of academic economists, say that this plan would cause the American national debt to increase at a much faster rate than the American economy, so, according to, again, academic economists, this tax plan causes more harm than good. This is not normal.

Just recently, there was an attack on an Egyptian mosque that killed over 200 people. Other world leaders offered their condolences and sympathies; meanwhile, Donald Trump used it to renew his call to build a border wall between the US and Mexico. He also used to renew his call for a Muslim travel ban, which he has tried to implement multiple times and failed to do because our Supreme Court thankfully struck down. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I’m aware, no other world leader does this kind of thing when events with mass casualties like this happen, no matter where they are. In this case, the attack happened in Egypt and our president made it about himself. This is not normal.

Trump is not our president. This is because he lost the popular vote, but that doesn’t matter because he won the electoral vote. As far as I know, the United States is the only country to decide its presidents in the manner. And, once again, Donald Trump made it about himself by not only calling this “fake news” but also asking for recounts and trying to launch a commission to investigate voter fraud, because he thinks that this is the reason that he lost the popular vote, even though there were only 4 documented cases of voter fraud in the entire United States, and, to put it in perspective, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump’s opponent, won the popular vote by about 3 million votes, which is about the population of Philadelphia and Dallas combined. This is not normal.

Considering our president and how he got to be there, the fact that many Americans want to move to Canada or somewhere in Europe doesn’t surprise me. Believe me, if I was older and had more money, I would do that in a heartbeat. Donald Trump is probably the most hateful president we’ve ever had, or at least the most hateful president I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. Take into account everything that I’ve written about in this letter, and when you do, all I ask is that you remember one simple thing:

This is not normal.

Sincerely,
