...Do you mind if I call you that? I’ve never been much of a “political person” which I think explains why I’m following the events of the past few months so closely. Rather than politics, I feel like I’m watching a scandalous soap opera, complete with massive contradictions, dirty lies, and a few grossly egotistic characters. The problem is, the show is no longer keeping anyone guessing.
I must preface this by saying I have always maintained a moral opposition to you. I think it was the release of the 2005 recording where you uttered, “When you’re a star… you can do anything [to women].” Yea, from there we were off to a bad start. Somehow purging it from my memory, I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt after your inauguration. You certainly promised popularity and winning, which is something we are all attracted to. So I held my tongue and waited. But I’ve come to learn it’s your core beliefs, rather than your words, that are so detrimental. It’s your belief that if you’re an A-lister, rich and famous that is, the rules don’t apply. And to be fair, we haven’t completely proven you wrong yet.
You’ve continuously crossed moral boundaries and perpetrated messages of “us” versus “them.” The problem is you’re trying to divide our neighbors, our families, our democracy, and our country. I believe that’s one of the most harmful legacies you can create. I’ve watched you re-tweet racist images and lies, encourage violence, advocate the use of torture, and objectify women. Even scarier, these acts of hate seem to actually amuse and entertain you.
Politically you have also only encouraged division, denying any attempts of cooperation. Unlike our previous two presidents you chose only to elect narrow-minded Cabinet members affiliated with your own party. Apart from the insults you’ve thrown around at virtually every minority group, you’ve openly belittled countless politicians, news reporters, and just about anyone who’s different than you. Other than Hillary Clinton and former President Obama, who have probably suffered the worst of your attacks, you’ve publicly belittled Senator Lindsey Graham, Mitt Romney, Anderson Cooper, Forbes Magazine, Senator Elizabeth Warren...to name a few.
It must be tiring to constantly preach hate and tell lies; I certainly know we are tired of hearing it. And now as the political scandals unfold, your presidency seems to get more twisted every day.
My first reaction was to laugh when I read the reports that you fired former FBI Director James Comey and then further disclosed that this was in reaction to a memo you issued to Comey to drop the Mike Flynn investigations. I think it amused me because I actually understood your reaction- it’s unfair and insulting that Comey ignored your memo! In fact, I might have done the same thing! But then again, I’m not President of the United States.
I sadly can’t even say that the most recent accusations of your leaking classified information to Russian officials during an Oval Office meeting surprised me. And as your National Security Advisor General McMaster stated, “The president wasn’t even aware where this information came from. He wasn’t briefed on the source or method of information.” Great, so we can all be reassured now because at least our President’s advisors are smart enough to know not to disclose sensitive information to him. Either that or the briefing was too long for you to read.
And in the wake of “bigger” reports like this, previous incidents that are equally as deplorable have faded into the background. These incidents include the numerous contractors and workers dating back to the 1980s who have claimed your refusal to pay them for services on Trump projects, the various sexual assault allegations made against you between 1970 and 2005, and we recently learned that the Trump campaign spent more than $55,000 in purchases of your book, sending that donor money right back into your pockets. And that’s just to name a few of the infuriating events the public has been slammed with since you began campaigning. Time and time again, you’ve let us down, Donald.
In terms of political action, I can’t say that the little you’ve accomplished thus far has surprised me, because I’ve quickly realized that you have no idea what you’re doing. As the least experienced and least competent person who has ever assumed a high position in our government, I expect we’re on about the same level when it comes to politics. So in that regard, I empathize with you. I understand why you haven’t accomplished anything; these checks and balances are tricky! It must be hard to have the media constantly in your face, watching your every move; it must be hard to make decisions for one of the most powerful countries in the world, full of a beautifully diverse population all desperately shouting our own opinions. I am sure it’s difficult, but then again, what did you expect?
I have to say, throughout this nightmare-ish comedy show, there is one light shining through the darkness. In your attempt to diminish us small people and spread messages of hate, you’ve managed to do just the opposite. All over the country, especially on the local level, people are speaking up. Now more than ever I see my friends and family informed and engaged; I see groups of all people coming together to stand up to your hate. So thank you for helping many of us to find a voice and don’t be fooled, we will keep shouting until our voice has been heard.
And to end with a word of advice, not that you asked, I’d recommend you work on your ego. You might be surprised to learn that you actually attract what you give out. Spread love and compassion and it will find its way back to you, just as the opposite is true.
Best of luck.
