Dear Donald

An Open Letter to Donald Trump

I don't know where to begin.

My heart has felt heavy these last two years, heavier than it should at only 22. I didn't know it was possible to feel so much hate, and I've learned that there's no limit to the amount of hate one can hold in their heart.

I hate that your election has caused America to show its true colors. You've shown people that they can be racist, sexist, mean, childish... they can be anything, basically, and nothing will happen. Hell, they might even become President of the United States someday.

I hate that you put a man like Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, a man who complained about how hard his life is because a woman he hurt decided it was time to tell the truth. And I hate that a woman like Betsy DeVos is in charge of education. Education! The fact that she graduated from college astounds me, yet she's in charge of education in America. These people are in charge of molding and protecting young minds, yet neither are suited for that role.

I hate your daughter, Ivanka. She claims to be an advocate for women, yet says nothing while you damage the lives of women in this country. I think she's worse than you, actually. Because you're an old, white man in a country run by old, white men, and she's a woman who won't stand up for what's right and just. She watches other women suffer while you support rapists, while you call abortion wrong, while you try to close places like Planned Parenthood.

I hate that Mike Pence sits at your side, whispering in your ear. I'm not dumb enough to believe for one second that you have any real power. You're a pawn played by the Republican Party, and when this all comes crashing down, who do you think they're going to blame? Not Pence. You. Because you're in the hot seat, and Pence, a man who believes conversion therapy can "cure" homosexuality, can feed you ideas without having to face the same scrutiny.

And I hate you, with your fake tan and your scowl. I hate everything you are, everything you've done to this country. This is nowhere near a complete list of the things I hate, the things that weigh on my young soul day after day. But they all boil down to you.

I do have to thank you, though.

You've given me so many reasons to hate that I have to acknowledge the things you taught me.

Thank you for reminding me that my voice is important. I know that every voice, every vote is a stand against you and everyone else who shares the same, twisted ideals as you. It's easy to forget how important your voice is when it seems to get lost in a sea of other peoples', but you reminded me that it doesn't get lost: it thrives

Thank you for connecting me with others who share my distraught over the state of our country right now, others who are ashamed to be an American because being American means you, Donald J. Trump, are our president. I can talk to people about nothing more than our hopes and dreams for the world to come, because strangers and I share the same conviction that you are what is wrong with this country.

Thank you for showing me the country I live in. I wouldn't have thought so at the time, but I was naive. I didn't know the country I lived in. Now I do. It took your election to show me that America is just as hateful as ever—that it still doesn't give a damn about anyone who isn't white and male. Racism is still as prevalent as ever. My body still isn't considered my body to do what I want with. Our planet is dying and America doesn't care.

Because of you, I see America for what it truly is, and now I know exactly what I have to fight for if I want to have a chance in this world.
