Dear Donald... We'll Have to Save Ourselves

America is still functioning at the hands of millions of civilians, while one incompetent man sits in a big fancy office.

Dear Donald,

Following the unprecedented 2017 presidential elections, our nation has been swept into unknown territory. Our country appears to be more polarized than ever at least politically, which right now seems like the only thing people can talk about. And I must say it’s not for nothing. When the President of the United States is consistently in the spotlight for a multitude of wrongdoings ranging from sexual harassment charges to sheer ignorance regarding politics, it’s natural to question what is going on here.

Now some may assert Trump’s “successes,” like his appointment of Neil Gorsuch to supreme court or his attempt to dismantle the Obama legacy. His work has included withdrawing from the Trans- Pacific Partnership as well a historic reversal of government rules in record time. Within the first 60 days, Trump signed 13 bills erasing regulations on the environment, labor, financial protections, internet privacy, abortion, education, and gun rights. Instead of making real changes, Trump’s tactic focuses on hacking down legislation, in what almost seems like several random acts to cause as much destruction as possible.

Although some who support the various efforts of Trump may attribute these decisions to his success, I would argue that these accidental acts were nothing more than mere coincidence and guessing. President Trump has displayed a level of disastrous idiocy throughout his campaign and first few months in office that make me certain that these successes indeed cannot be credited to the president himself. Rather, they are products of the environment that existed before he took office and continue to exist regardless of his occupation of the Oval Office.

Despite being a disconcerting call for help from much of our American population, I have been pleasantly surprised by the lack of damage caused by our new president. Rather than the world quickly spiraling into a dark, hateful hole, the Earth is still spinning, and even better, the US has not self-destructed! As a country founded on checks and balances complete with many layers of division and organization, we’re still doing alright!

Please do not misunderstand me; I do not mean to tribute these achievements to the Donald himself. These are the successes of the hard working Americans themselves. As days pass and Trump continues to accomplish nothing other than shouting lies and compromising national security, the people are still working. The teachers are going to work to educate our students, the reporters, whether adequately or not, are showing up to inform the public, the social security checks are still being signed and delivered in a timely fashion, and the list goes on.

Trump can intimidate and lie and harass as much as he wants, but that’s not stopping the government officials, state employees, white and blue collar workers, laborers, and teachers from showing up to work and completing their jobs. So although the election of Trump may have seemed like a detrimental choice to many, we can all release a sigh as it appears that America is still functioning at the hands of millions of civilians, while one incompetent man sits in a big fancy office.
